Reaping the Full Benefits of Road Tolling & Road User Charging

Countries and cities around the world are embracing Road Tolling & Road User Charging (RUC) at a rate not previously seen before. In 2015, approximately 50 countries had at least one significant scheme (road tolls, congestion pricing, etc.) in place, a figure which will rise to 60 by 2025.

No less impressive are the technology enablers supporting this acceleration. Solutions such as GNSS-based tolling and Internet of Things devices have changed the way Road Tolling & RUC projects can be designed to achieve multiple goals at once, whilst collecting valuable data from each node in the charging ecosystem

Many agencies and tolling operators however continue to conceive Road Tolling & RUC projects as single-purpose instruments. As a case in point, road user data is often siloed within individual agencies, preventing the broader transportation industry from forming a complete picture of transportation patterns.

If road tolling stakeholders can break out of these silos, it will be possible to design next generation Road Tolling & RUC projects that actively support multiple transportation and sustainability objectives.
